Imagine trying to get a goodnight’s sleep, but then as soon as you close your eyes, you can feel something crawling around your head. And it’s not just one or two of them but a dozen, or perhaps even hundreds!
If that ever happens to you, then get ready for some bad news- you have lice. And with that, you can say ‘goodbye’ to your precious sleep.
As a stylist, I have seen it happen over and over again for years. Whether it is a child or an adult, once someone you know gets the bug, it spreads like wildfire.
And, it just keeps getting worse, especially if you delay the treatment. Your scalp will get itchy, flaky, and, not to mention the fact that the lice will multiply like crazy!
Even brands like BaByliss won’t save you if you don’t address the lice situation
So, to get rid of them at the earliest, you need to do some DIY treatment at home. In this article, I will guide you through the step-by-step process of how to use a hair dryer for lice.
What Are Lice?
Lice, otherwise known as cooties, are tiny little head bugs that can easily transfer from one person to another. They are brown in color which makes them difficult to spot, especially if you are a brunet or having a darker hair color.
The eggs of these creatures are called nits that the lice anchor to the roots of your hair so that they don’t fall out easily. Now, lice and nits can thrive on anything made out of fiber. It can be your hair, pillowcases, sofa covers, even your bedsheets.
So, the only way a person can get infected is if they come in contact with a person with head lice or with any piece of fabric that contains it. Lice usually bite into your scalp so you may experience some allergic reactions because of it.
Effective Guidelines for How to Use a Hair Dryer for Lice
The sole aim behind using this type of application is to make sure that you can get every last of those creatures out of your scalp. The steps are easy to follow and they are safe to use on both children as well as on adults.
Step 1 – Rinsing
You begin your thermal treatment by washing your hair and scalp thoroughly with shampoo. Personally, I use hot water as you get better results. Also, it will be even more effective if you are able to get your hands on some lice shampoo. But a regular one works as well.
Remove any surface dirt and nits. They usually attach themselves to the roots of the hair. The eggs look very similar to that of dandruff so it is easy to confuse them with each other.
So, make sure you dig your fingers in during the cleansing process. And by the time you are done washing your hair, make sure that you get a clean scalp.
Step 2 – Blow drying
After washing your hair, pat it dry and start blow-drying for about half an hour. Since you are not going to be taking any breaks in between, you might want to get comfortable before you begin.
Grab a chair and section your hair. Then start the blow drying each section at a time. To avoid damaging your hair, keep the setting at medium temperature. Using it at a lower heat setting will not destroy the nits or the lice. That’s why it is important to check that you are using the right settings.
Step 3 – Combing
By the time the heating application is over, most of the eggs and lice should be dead. So, next, you need to get them out of your hair. Buy a head lice comb or a nit comb.
A regular comb won’t get the job done in this case. So, purchase one and start combing your hair on a regular basis for at least a week or so.
The frequency of combing depends on the rate of infestation. If you have a lot of bugs in your hair then you may have to continue combing for a couple of weeks.
Step 4 – Re-shampooing
Once you get rid of as many dead bugs as possible, you need to wash your hair again with lice shampoo. This will get rid of the rest of the surviving or dead lice in your hair.
Step 5 – Thermal therapy
Here’s the truth, it’s impossible to get rid of all the lice and nits in one go. If you have a large number scurrying about in your scalp, to make sure that you are able to evict them completely from your hair, you need to repeat the entire process for at least a week.
Also, do a lice check every now and then. You can either do it yourself or ask a friend to do it for you. After you are sure that they are no longer there, then you can stop the treatment process.
How Effective Is a Blow Dryer?
There are several other chemical solutions that you can use such as tonics and shampoos. But the issue with these products is the compatibility with each skin type.
For those of you who have sensitive skin or for those with skin allergies, using chemical products may cause some severe reactions. So, if you want to go down a safe path, I would suggest using a blow dryer.
It is cheap and comes in handy in the long run. Whether it is lice or nits, neither can tolerate heat. As soon as the blast of hot air comes in contact with them, it dries them out.
If you want to think about it from a statistical point of view, then about 86 – 98 percent of them die each time you use a blow dryer. Even many hair salons recommend using this method.
Plus, people with rough hair – who have a tough time managing the mess – can use their favorite coarse hair irons once the lice are out of the way.
What Type of Blow Dryers Work Best for Lice Treatment?
Here’s a little something that you should keep in mind, with this type of treatment you are trying to kill lice, not your hair. Exposing your beautiful tresses to heat for a long period of time can damage your roots, thus causing hair loss.
To prevent this from happening, it is important to choose a good-quality blow dryer. Usually, people believe that if you want the best, you need to loosen your purse strings. But that’s not true at all.
I can easily name two such products that work miracles and are quite reasonable.
Dealing with frizzy hair is tiring and, to top it with lice infestation is nothing short of a nightmare. But to ease your troubles, this model specializes in making your hair more manageable. And of course, it can be used for other hair types as well.
Focusing on the design, it is equipped with infrared and tourmaline ionic technology. The infrared heat technology protects your hair by retaining its natural moisture. What you get is maximum shine and softness.
And, your hair becomes easy to control. Also, it prevents your strands from over-drying, especially if you are using it in a high-temperature setting.
The negative ions of the tourmaline technology control the frizz by maintaining a neutral charge on the surface of the hair. It conditions and smoothens the follicles and gives them a healthy texture. And it doesn’t stop there, in addition to the infrared technology, it also boosts the shine of your hair. So, you get a nice salon finish after using it.
The dryer comes with two heat and 2 speed settings which I believe is quite convenient. You can easily change the settings while working on your hair. It also has a cold shot button that releases cold air instead of hot.
Furthermore, if you are still concerned about hair damage, then here’s something that you will love. The blades at the outlet nozzle are covered with a triple ceramic coating that reduces the harmful effects of the heat. It evenly distributes the airflow and ensures that it quickly penetrates the hair. And, it styles your hair from the inside out.
The dryer also comes with a smoothing concentrator, volumizer diffuser, and sectioning clips. You can use the clips to divide your hair into multiple sections. Attach the concentrator to the outlet nozzle and focus the heat on a particular section. This will increase the rate of killing the lice.
Or, if you want to dry them out on a broader range, you can attach the volumizer diffuser to the outlet nozzle instead and bring the dryer closer to the roots of your hair. Coming to the maintenance part, you don’t need to put in much effort. Simply spot or wipe clean it.

This is another one of my favorites. Mind you, it is slightly pricier than the previous hair dryer. But, in my opinion, it’s worth every penny. Similar to Revlon, it has tourmaline technology that calms down the frizz and seals the cuticle to give a shiny and sleek look. And, it has infrared heat technology as well.
It has two speed settings- high and low. Along with the dryer, you get two other attachments, a diffuser, and a concentrator. They are suitable for different hairstyles and also give you maximum precision.
Here’s what makes this particular model different from that of Revlon. It has 3 multiple heat settings- low, medium, and high. This way, you have more options over the heat intensity. You use it to blow dry damaged hair as well.
It also has a cool shot button. So, if you ever want to cool air and dry your hair, you can opt for this button. But, to get rid of lice, I would say stick to the medium heat setting.
The hair dryer is light in weight. The outer surface is made out of high-quality matte material. In terms of design, it has an ergonomic design which makes the tedious work of hairstyling seem effortless. The grip is comfortable and the settings are placed strategically which makes it easy to operate.
The device runs on a powerful DC motor which is similar to the ones I use in salons. It enables the hair to dry off faster and does minimal damage to the hair if you are using a high heat setting.
To prevent the motor from overheating, there is thermal safety protection that immediately cuts off the power. Or, if the motor is close to getting overheated, the device will not operate at high temperatures. It is only after it cools down, you are free to use it at high heat.
Lastly, it is easy to clean and has an air filter that prevents your hair from getting sucked into the fan. And the device, itself, is quite durable.

Sometimes the simplest way is the best way to go. Using blow dryers to treat lice is easy and there isn’t any other cheaper way to get this done which makes it perfect for those who are living on a budget.
And, also for those who have children because playgrounds and schools are a cesspool for these creatures. So, trust me, they keep coming back over and over again.
Using this method is effective and can save you a ton of money in the long run. All you have to do is follow the steps and the result will be right before your eyes. Cheers!
