Once upon a time, making a fresh batch of rosin was quite the herculean task. However, I am not Hercules, and I am certainly not planning to waste my entire day making rosin.
So, I found a way to make rosin with some simple household items and cannabis flower, hash, or kief. You just need a hair straightener, yes you read it right, a hair straightener and all of your strength to squeeze it.
In the article, I’m going to talk about what you will need and how you are supposed to extract rosin from cannabis flowers, hash, kief and etc. So, dabbing enthusiasts, stay tuned because the fun is just about to begin.
What is Rosin, and Where Does it Come From?
You can call it a specific type of wax or oil; it doesn’t matter. What matters is that it is the only solventless extraction out there. People use it for many purposes, especially for dabbing and medicinal reasons.
Now, where does rosin come from? Well, as I said earlier, it remains within the body of cannabis flowers, kief, and bubble hash. With the right technique and enough heat, you can squeeze out the juicy right from their cores.
It is next to impossible to figure out the difference between rosin and sap or shatter. There is only one dissimilarity between the two, and it is that rosin doesn’t contain any residual solvents like propane, butane, or etc., which is usually left behind by the hydrocarbon extraction method.
The Materials You Need to Make Rosin Dabs
The best thing about the technique I use to make rosins at home is that I don’t need any fancy items or materials. I already had most of the items in my home, and chances are you may also have them lying around too.
Nevertheless, even if you don’t have them, you shouldn’t worry because they are quite cheap and you can get them from pretty much any store near your house.
- A Hair Straightener (Possibly a one that features low-temperature settings around 280°-300° F otherwise, the terpenes or extracted oil may evaporate during the process)
- The main ingredient (Cannabis flowers, cannabinoids, kief, or bubble hash)
- Parchment paper (better if it is unbleached)
- Collecting Tools (You can use different sorts of dabbers, or whatever you think is best for dabbing)
- Heat-resistant gloves to keep your hands shiny and safe
07 Steps for Pressing Rosin with a Hair Straightener
Extracting rosin with a straightener is relatively easy when you know what to do. The process may get a little sticky, but in the end, it’s all worth it. Check out the simple steps on how to make rosin with a straightener.
Step-1
Connect the hair straightener and set it to the lowest temperature setting. It should be around 280°-300° F or a little less. If your straightener doesn’t feature this temperature range, then you will need to use a temperature gun.
In order to do that, you will first need to turn on the straightener and then turn it off. You will then have to measure the accurate temperature of the hair straightener. Once the reading shows it is around 280°-300° F, you are ready to start the process.
Step-2
Take a parchment paper and cut a small piece of 5-6 inches. Take the piece of paper and fold it in half.
Step-3
Now you can either use a rosin bag and the paper or just the parchment paper. It actually depends on you. Once you are done deciding it, take the material (flower buds, cannabinoids, and etc.) and place it in between the folded paper.
Press the parchment paper lightly with your fingers and make sure there are air spaces.
If you are using rosin bags, then pack the material inside them nicely and evenly. Be a bit careful because you don’t want the material to remain ground up. If you want extra protection, you can use two rosin bags.
Step-4
Take the parchment paper with the buds and place it in between the plates of the hair straightener carefully. Make sure to align the paper and the buds properly in the straightener. (If you are using rosin bags, then place them in between the folded parchment paper)
Afterward, you need to press the straightener firmly for almost 3-7 seconds. You will hear a sizzling sound while you are pressing the straightener. It is actually good because it means that the resin is melting. Now, take out the parchment paper and make sure you are wearing the heat-resistant gloves.
Step-5
Unfold the paper and take out the remaining bits of the plant. Grab the collecting tools or the dabbers. The extraction process is going to sticky; therefore, you should be careful and patient.
Step-6
Check for flattened plant materials and remove them according to your need. Make sure the tools you are using for the disposal process are clean. Take the paper with the finished product inside and get ready for dabbing.
Step-7
Use the collecting tool or the dabber to slowly collect the rosin. Don’t be hasty, or you may lose valuable oil. If you feel uncomfortable working with a hot surface, you can let the parchment paper cool down for a bit.
Some Final Piece of Advice
Nowadays, the process of extracting rosin from plants with a hair straightener is quite a famous technique. It is easy, takes only a few minutes, and you don’t even need to invest a lot.
I just want to tell you guys to be safe because there is a chance that you may scald your hands if not careful. So, make sure to wear gloves and keep your hands safe.
Now that you know how to make rosin with a hair straightener, why not give it a try? I hope things will work out the way you intend to, and happy dabbing folks.
